Like Father Like Son: John and Dario Carnera on the Craft of Bespoke

The world of bespoke tailoring on London’s Savile Row is a small one. Ahead of Father’s Day, Kirby Alison of The Hanger Project interviewed our Co-Head cutter Dario Carnera who invited his father John to speak of the craft and benefits of bespoke tailoring. It’s a very special and unique relationship between the craftsmen on Savile Row. None more so than our very own Co-Head Cutter Dario Carnera and his esteemed father, the Master Lastmaker, John. Though the Carnera name is synonymous with the highest quality of craftsmanship, it’s clear that it’s more than just the family name that unites these two remarkable men. A devotion to their trade, an obsession for perfection, skills honed over a lifetime and an innate knowledge of their clients’ — many of whom are shared — wants and needs. “This is a labour of love”, explains Dario, about his role at Huntsman. “More than just experience, crafting a bespoke suit is also about having the cutters’ ‘rock of eye’”, he says. This is why your bespoke suit should be made by the best, our Huntsman specialists. Much like our iconic Huntsman house cut and house tweed, honed by master craftspeople across several decades, the relationship between client and cutter is very important. You can trust your cutter to know your form, taste, style and what suits you best. It’s the kind of service you simply can’t find elsewhere in the world, as regular clients of Dario will testify. “Clients will call and ask to have me pick them out a suit”, says Dario. “They trust me to know what they like, their style and how they would like to look. As a result, we’ll often be working with three generations of the same family at the same time”, he explains.     The talent it takes to become a master craftsman is clearly in the Carnera genes and you can experience this first hand when you book an appointment with Huntsman. Whether it’s for yourself or if you’re looking for a gift that celebrates craft and legacy, what could be better than to share the time-honoured tradition of bespoke tailoring?
